Back Again

August 2, 2009

Hail, faithful readers! I have not posted for two weeks. I am horrible.

Here’s what happened:

The 3rd-22nd was spent in Oxford, and that was mostly noneventful, save schoolwork. When things finally started to happen I was away from readily-available computers. At a few points I sat down and started to blag, but got whisked away by the spirits of tourism and jollity.

The trip ended well, with a night in Durham castle, a few nights in youth hostels, and a few more in London.

God is good, the trip was unparalleled meaningful fun, and I am home. Hurray.

Thanks for reading. If you have specific questions about my trip send me an email sometime. I’m danielATlehn dot org.

Peace,

Daniel

Hya dear readers,

Things in Oxford are normal, which is why I have not written. There’s not much to say, other than we’ve been having classes and eating meals and sleeping– it’s very normal here.

A few days ago we went to Stratford and saw a production of A Winter’s Tale, which was cool. We saw Shakespeare’s grave, church, and house of birth. Have you ever read Shakespeare? He’s pretty good…

I had tea in Stratford and it was delish.

The day before Stratford I went for a long walk. The city is okay, but the area surrounding Oxford is superb.

All is well in this neck of the woods.

Happy Rebellion Day!

Romans 13

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

Happy In-dependence Day! Today our group went punting down a river, but that’s not important right now.

Yesterday after class I went to a very nice used bookstore and purchased a single-volume edition of Lord of the Rings, which I then took about 50 paces down the sidewalk to a certain establishment called The Eagle and the Child, the spot where the esteemed Inklings used to meet weekly. I sat down and read about hobbits in that very room.

The meals here at St. Anne’s are excellent. One of the many fun things about eating in England has been the breakfast food. They served mushrooms, tomatoes and beans this morning, in addition to the typical staples.

Yesterday we visited the Kilns, the house where C.S. Lewis lived from 1929 to his death in 1963, also the plac ewhere he wrote all the Narnia books. It’s a charming location.

One of Lewis’s reflections I have been agreeing with is this, that (approximately) "if I find in me desires that cannot be satisfied in this world, I must conclude that I was made for another one." As I see fantastic sights and do fun things over the course of this trip, I am only led to wish for more than what this world has to offer.

A quick yo,

Yo. All is well, the scenery is great, the people are nice, the food is filling, the crowds are underwhelming, and I am happy as I live a life of progressive sanctification under God’s mighty hand.

More to come in a few days when I reach Oxford.
